Mudzuri backtracks on order

Energy and Power Development Minister Elias Mudzuri has backtracked on a recent order he gave directing Zesa to stop power exports to Namibia until the utility satisfied local consumers.
Last week, Minister Mudzuri said it was not sensible for Zimbabwe to meet its electricity obligations to Namibia through power imports.
Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Minister Mudzuri said Zimbabwe was still committed to the Zesa-NamPower deal.
He said the country was committed to maintaining cordial relations with its Sadc partners through such regional agreements.
"The agreement between Zesa and Nam-Power is an example of South-South co-operation and illustrates co-operation by Sadc members in promoting regional economic development on a win-win basis.
"The Government of Zimbabwe and Zesa remain committed to the terms of both the Loan Agreement and the Power Purchase Agreement as well as the SAPP (Southern Africa Power Pool) protocols," he said.
Under the deal, Namibia provided a loan facility for the refurbishment of Hwange Thermal Station. Zimbabwe, in turn, is exporting electricity to Namibia at optimal rates for a period of five years. |
